5 Interesting and Useful Websites

I spend a good deal of time on the internet doing research for various projects I am working on. During the course of my research I almost always end up finding something that I was not looking for which starts a new research project and thus the infinite circle is created.

I have randomly selected 5 websites that I hope you will find interesting, useful, and/or entertaining.

1. Fiverr.comThe place for people to share things they’re willing to do for $5.

Signing up for an account with Fiverr is fast, free, and easy. Once you have an account you can either create “Gigs”, buy “Gigs”, or you can even request “Gigs”. A “Gig” is simply an offer to do something for $5 and you will be amazed at what people will do for $5.

Fiverr.com – has a very simple fee structure keeping $1 out of each $5 Gig. Want someone to sing you happy birthday on video? How about send you a postcard from Indonesia? Want someone to hand draw a portrait of you from a photograph? The list goes on and on, from the very professional to the artistic to the just plain weird, it’s all on Fiverr.com.

2. TED.com – Ideas worth spreading. TED is for: Technology Entertainment Design.

TED.com is the video hosting place for all the TED conference videos featuring some of the brightest, gifted, talented, and inspirational people from all around the world. The idea behind TED was to bring together some of the worlds best thinkers and doers to share what they have to say in 18 minutes or less and then share it with the world.

On TED.com you will find some videos that are just entertainment, but most videos will be informative, inspiring, and at times, completely jaw-dropping. Often times, new technology is presented on the TED stage before it is ever seen anywhere else in the world, sometimes coming straight from the lab it was developed in.

3. FreeVideoLectures.com – Bringing Free Education to All.

Ever wanted to get your learn on but college just was not your thing? FreeVideoLectures.com has over 800 online courses, more than 19,000 videos from over 30 of the top Universities in more than 35 different categories. Oh yeah, if the name did not give it away, it’s all completely free, you don’t even have to sign up or sign in, just click and play.

Sure, it’s not an actual college course and your not going to get college credits, but if you want to learn at the college level, there are some great videos here.

4. TRUECRYPT.org – Free Open Source On The Fly Encryption.

Ok, so the TrueCrypt.org website is not the most intriguing or entertaining, but it is what they offer and for free no less. If you do not know what encryption software is, it is software that allows you to secure electronic files (files on your computer or any device that can hold electronic files) in such a way that they are unreadable and completely useless unless you have the software and password to open them.

If you have files and folders on your system that you would like to keep private from prying eyes, this software will do the trick for you. A little history lesson on the encryption industry.

Several years ago the United States Government was in the market for some new encryption technology, so they held a contest. The contest rules were simple, gives us the very best encryption worthy of the United States Government and we will give you the contract. True Crypt uses the exact same encryption software that the top 3 runners in the contest used. It’s the type of encryption software that the FBI would struggle to crack if they could crack it at all.

I’m not saying you have anything on your system you need to hide from the FBI, but almost everyone has something they would like to keep private and this software will help you do that.

5. BulkFoods.com – Wholesale Bulk Foods, Chocolates, Candy, Nuts and Spices.

BulkFoods.com is one of my favorite places for ordering goodies. They have a huge selection and most of their prices are very reasonable. When I buy protein powder, I get it from BulkFoods.com because gram for gram pure protein, BulkFoods.com is the cheapest I have found anywhere.

They have: nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruits, spices, herbs, chocolates, candies, and loads of other great items.

Each of these sites are worth checking out if just once.
